If your trade is eligible for Local Service Ads, start there. You pay per lead instead of per click, LSA sits above every other result including paid search, and cost per lead is usually lower. Add Google Ads second, once you're capturing the LSA inventory your market has available — which happens faster than most contractors expect.

That's the short answer. The rest of this page is when it's wrong.

The core difference

LSA charges you when a lead contacts you. Google Ads charges you when someone clicks.

That single distinction drives almost everything else.

Local Service Ads Google Ads
You pay for Leads Clicks
Position on page Very top, above paid search Below LSA, above organic
Eligible categories Restricted — home services, legal, a few others Almost anything
Inventory Finite. Capped by local search volume Effectively unlimited
Setup time 3–4 weeks (verification) 1–2 weeks
Control over targeting Minimal — category and service area Extensive — keywords, audiences, schedules, devices
Ad creative None. Your profile is the ad Full control over copy and extensions
Bad leads Disputable and refundable Not refundable
What drives position Review rating, responsiveness, proximity, budget Bid, quality score, relevance
Minimum viable spend $1,000/mo $1,500/mo ($3,000 legal)

When LSA wins

Emergency and urgent work. A homeowner with a burst pipe taps the top result. LSA is the top result, and the Google Verified badge reassures someone who's about to let a stranger into their house.

When your reviews are strong. LSA position is driven heavily by review rating, so a business with 200 reviews at 4.8 gets disproportionate value. If you've done the review work, LSA rewards it more directly than any other channel.

When your budget is tight. At $1,000/month, LSA generally produces more usable leads than the same money in Google Ads, because you're not paying for clicks that never convert.

When you answer the phone. Responsiveness feeds LSA ranking directly. Businesses with good answer rates get a compounding advantage.

When Google Ads wins

When you need volume LSA can't supply. This is the big one. LSA inventory is finite — capped by how many people in your area search your category. Once you're capturing most of it, more budget produces nothing. Google Ads is where growth continues.

When you want control. LSA gives you a category and a service area. Google Ads lets you separate emergency from planned work, bid differently by service line, exclude terms that waste money, and adjust by time of day and device. For a business with meaningfully different job values across services, that control is worth real money.

When your category isn't LSA-eligible. Most of them aren't.

When you're selling planned rather than urgent work. Someone researching a system replacement over three weeks behaves differently from someone with no heat tonight. Google Ads reaches the research phase; LSA mostly doesn't.

When you need to appear for specific terms. Brand defence, competitor terms, particular services — none of which LSA can target.

The position we'd take

For an eligible home services contractor, in order:

  1. Start LSA alone. Cheapest leads available, and verification takes 3–4 weeks anyway
  2. Run it for 60 days and find your ceiling — the point where more budget stops producing more leads
  3. Add Google Ads for the overflow, focused on the work LSA doesn't cover well: planned jobs, specific high-value services, and the searches your category doesn't capture
  4. Run both permanently, with LSA funded to its ceiling first

For a law firm, the same sequence, but Google Ads matters more sooner — legal search behaviour is more varied and LSA inventory in legal categories is thinner relative to demand.

Do they cannibalise each other?

Somewhat, and it's worth understanding rather than ignoring.

Both can appear for the same search, and the same person may see your LSA listing and your Google Ad. You could pay twice to reach one prospect.

In practice this matters less than it sounds. LSA appears above paid search, so if you rank well in LSA you frequently capture the click before your own Google Ad is seen. The real waste happens when a contractor bids aggressively on the exact emergency terms LSA already dominates for them.

The fix: once LSA is performing, review your Google Ads search terms and pull back on the ones LSA reliably captures. Redeploy that budget on planned-work and service-specific terms LSA can't reach. This is the single most common optimisation we make on accounts running both.

What about cost per lead?

Compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead. LSA leads are often cheaper but include more junk — wrong numbers, out-of-area calls, services you don't offer. Google Ads leads cost more and are frequently better qualified because the searcher read your ad first.

Which is why disputing LSA leads matters. Filing weekly changes your effective cost materially, and most contractors never do it.

You can model both with the LSA ROI calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Should I run Google Ads or Local Service Ads first?

LSA, if your trade is eligible. Lower cost per lead, top of page, and you pay per lead rather than per click. Add Google Ads once you're capturing available LSA inventory.

Can I run both at the same time?

Yes, and most established contractors should. Fund LSA to its ceiling first, then use Google Ads for planned work and specific services LSA doesn't cover. Review your search terms periodically to avoid bidding on what LSA already wins.

Which is cheaper?

LSA usually has a lower cost per lead. Cost per booked job is closer, because LSA leads include more junk. Compare on booked jobs and file your disputes.

Why is my LSA budget not spending?

Usually because you've reached the available inventory — there simply aren't more searches in your category and area. That's the signal to add Google Ads rather than raising the LSA budget.

Does LSA replace Google Ads?

No. LSA has restricted categories, finite inventory and almost no targeting control. It's the best first channel for eligible trades, not a complete paid strategy.

How long does LSA take to set up?

Three to four weeks for verification — background checks, licence verification, active insurance and a maintained Google Business Profile. Google Ads can be live in one to two weeks. Start LSA verification immediately since nothing runs during it.

Do reviews affect both?

They affect LSA ranking directly and significantly. They influence Google Ads indirectly through click-through rate and conversion. Either way, review generation is the highest-leverage free work available.

What if I'm not in an eligible category?

Then Google Ads is your capture channel — see the Google Ads guide. Eligible categories cover home services, legal and a handful of others; most businesses aren't included.
